Your first spa visit: what to expect
Prep, etiquette and reasonable expectations for first-time spa-goers.
April 26, 2026
A first spa visit can feel awkward if you don't know the rhythm. This guide covers the most common questions and unspoken expectations before you book.
Before booking
- Skim the service menu — most spas offer 60- and 90-minute packages plus standalone treatments (massage, sauna, hydrotherapy).
- Look at facility photos — good spas show their interior.
- Read 5-10 recent reviews — focus on hygiene and booking-accuracy comments, not just the end result.
- Book at least 2-3 hours ahead, especially on weekends.
On the day
Arrive 15 minutes early. That gives you time to check in, change, and have a short consultation with your therapist. If you're 10+ minutes late they may shorten your session.
- Don't arrive hungry — a light meal 1-2 hours before is ideal. No heavy food.
- Skip alcohol and caffeine in the hours before — most treatments work better on a hydrated body.
- Wear loose clothing — you'll change once and post-treatment comfort matters.
- Take off jewellery beforehand — most spas provide a locker.
During the massage
The therapist will ask about pressure (light / medium / firm) and areas to avoid. Be honest — no one earns a medal for tolerating pain. If anything's uncomfortable, say so immediately.
After the treatment
- Drink water — at least 500ml in the following hour.
- Skip intense workouts for 24 hours after a deep massage.
- Save the shower for the evening or the next day — most massage oils keep working for 4-6 hours.
- Book your next session if you enjoyed it — good salons offer recurring slots.
Tipping
Not mandatory in Bulgaria; 10% of the service price is a standard gesture for great service. Always in cash unless the salon offers an in-app tip option.
Frequently asked questions
- How much does a spa treatment cost in Bulgaria?
- A 60-minute classic massage runs €30-45 at mid-range salons, €50-70 at premium. A day spa card (massage + sauna + pool) is typically €60-100.
- What if I have an allergy or condition?
- Tell your therapist before the session. Pregnancy, high blood pressure, recent surgery and some skin conditions require treatment modifications or contraindicate specific procedures. That's normal and in your interest.
- Can I cancel my booking?
- Yes — on ApexLoge you can cancel up to 24 hours before the treatment with no fee. Inside that window the salon's own cancellation policy applies, which usually keeps the deposit.
